A boat on Banks Lake is tiny against the massive wall of the Upper Grand Coulee. The setting sun lights up the wall of the Upper Grand Coulee, which rises several hundred feet above the floor of the chasm and Banks Lake, home of Steamboat Rock State Park in the distance at left. A normally underwater basalt haystack rock rests on newly exposed beach on Lake Roosevelt in early spring, when lake levels are often lowered to make room for spring runoff from area mountains, including from Candada. The Columbia drains an area the size of France. Water spill over the top of Grand Coulee Dam’s drum gates in spring of 2022 to lower Lake Roosevelt to accept spring runoff from melting snow in the moutnains.
